Oil Paintings
The foundation of my visual investigations is my oil painting practice. I build my own canvases ranging in size from small enough to be held in your hand to large enough to stand in front of like a doorway. Different dimensions call for different encounters. Aided by my eclectic collection of lightbulbs, I conduct experiments that play with fields of color, vaporous textures, and void-like depth. I begin by painting active marks to help settle things down. By the time I have covered the entire canvas, it is usually just me and the painting. I proceed to refine the painting from one stage of evolution to the next, typically homogenizing the surface to a minimalist verge. My hope is that the ostensible emptiness gives rise to an energizing stillness.
